Why does my computer restart all the time? PDF Print E-mail

You're there, sitting at your computer doing your stuff and suddenly, without apparent reason or warning your computer decides to restart.

Of course, you've working on a document for more than an hour and didn't have a chance to save it.  And of course your boss is waiting for that same document that is now lost forever.  Ok, you don't have choice, with a deep sigh you decide to start over, create a new document and before you finish the first sentence there it goes again, it restarts.

We all know the feeling.

What's the matter with that computer?

Well, of course, the first thing to do, if you can, is run a virus check on all the drives.  If your computer doesn't stay up long enough to do that, try booting from a rescue CD (more about that in another article) and check for viruses  If after booting that CD it does stay up long enough, there's a good chance that viruses are the culprits.

But if even after booting from the CD it restarts, then viruses are probably not the problem and you have to think of something else.

Very often, overheating will be the reason for the constant reboots.

Check both main fans, that of the CPU and the one for the power unit.  If either of those fans is defective and either the power unit or the CPU overheats, then you've found your problem and replace the faulty fan.

If this is obviously not the problem, then the next thing to look at is the RAM.  Well when I say look, I mean either have it tested at a specialized repair center or try some from an another computer if the RAMs are compatible.

For those who are not sure what I'm talking about, the RAM is the live memory component of your computer and looks like this:

If that component is defective, your computer will restart often but probably not as regularly as if overheating is the cause.  It will tend to be more random.
